TL/DR
Resident Evil is one connected story. It runs from the Umbrella Corporation's viruses in 1998, through the BSAA years and Albert Wesker's death, to a new cast in Village and Requiem.
Play the games by events dates, not release date. The one big example is Resident Evil 0, which happens the day before Resident Evil 1 but released after.
You don't need to have played everything. Most entries stand on their own, and Resident Evil 7 is built for people who know nothing about Umbrella.

This guide walks through the whole Resident Evil timeline and story, one game at a time, for anyone who has seen the franchise's name everywhere and never figured out how it fits together. You'll learn who the recurring characters are, which virus belongs to which game, and how Raccoon City ties into the newest releases. You don't need to have played any of them.

Most of the confusion in this series comes from the pile of different pathogens. Here's what each one is and where it shows up.

How It Starts: Umbrella and the T-Virus
Umbrella looked like a pharmaceutical company from the outside. Behind that, it built biological weapons. Co-founder Oswell Spencer wanted to push humanity into a forced evolution, and he paid for experiments on the progenitor virus his team dug up in West Africa in the 1960s. His lead scientist, James Marcus, mixed it with leech research and produced the T-virus.
Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 1: The Mansion Incident (July 1998)
Resident Evil 0
Resident Evil 0 opens on July 23, 1998. Rookie medic Rebecca Chambers is sent into the Arklay Mountains with STARS Bravo team to look into a run of murders. Her helicopter goes down, and she meets Billy Cohen, a former Marine convicted of killing civilians. They have good reasons to distrust each other and find out fast that they need each other to survive a train full of leeches and infected.
The train leads them to the old Umbrella facility where Marcus ran his experiments. Its files explain that Spencer had Marcus killed after the T-virus was done, and the killers were Marcus's own students, William Birkin and Albert Wesker. A leech that fed on Marcus absorbed his memories and gradually took his shape over ten years. It believes it is Marcus, and it contaminated the water supply at Arklay Lab, which sets off the mansion disaster. Rebecca and Billy destroy it, and Rebecca lets Billy go before heading to the Spencer Mansion to find Bravo team.
Resident Evil 1
Resident Evil 1 starts the next day, July 24, 1998. STARS Alpha team (Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, Barry Burton and captain Albert Wesker) goes looking for the missing Bravo team and takes cover in the Spencer Mansion after something chases them through the woods. They find zombies, mutated animals and a few Bravo members, some barely alive. Rebecca is the only Bravo survivor and joins them.
Under the mansion sits Umbrella's research lab, which accounts for the zombies, hunters and giant spiders. It also reveals that Wesker has been feeding combat data on Umbrella's weapons to his own side, with his team as the test subjects. He wakes the Tyrant, Umbrella's top creation at that point, and lets it impale him. The survivors kill the Tyrant, blow up the mansion and escape. When they try to expose Umbrella afterward, nobody believes them.
Wesker survived. Before the Tyrant hit him he had taken a prototype virus from Birkin, and it brought him back stronger and faster. He walked away with Umbrella's research.
Albert Wesker: The Thread Through the First Half
If you only track one character across the early games, pick Wesker. He fakes his death in Resident Evil 1, shows up alive in Code: Veronica, steals what Umbrella can't protect, and by the time of Resident Evil 4 he is the employer Ada Wong has been working for. Everything the series builds toward in Resident Evil 5 comes from what he gathers along the way.
Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Raccoon City (September to October 1998)
Resident Evil 2
By late September 1998, two months after the mansion, the T-virus has reached Raccoon City. On September 29, rookie cop Leon Kennedy arrives for his first day and walks into a city already falling apart. Claire Redfield arrives separately to look for her brother Chris. The two meet early, then get separated almost immediately, and each works through the police department, the sewers and Umbrella's hidden lab beneath the city.
Along the way they meet Sherry Birkin, the daughter of William Birkin, who created the G-virus. Umbrella soldiers gun William down to retrieve the sample, and he injects himself to survive, turning into one of the series' scariest monsters. Ada Wong is there for the G-virus too. She tells Leon she is with the FBI, but she is really a spy working for an employer she won't name. Deep in the lab, Sherry is infected with a G-virus embryo, Claire races to make a vaccine from Umbrella's own research, and Ada's cover collapses just before she takes a bullet and falls into the dark. The lab counts down to self-destruct, and Leon, Claire and Sherry escape on an emergency train after dealing with William for good.
Resident Evil 3
Resident Evil 3 overlaps with all of this. It starts a day before Resident Evil 2 and ends a couple of days after, in early October 1998. Jill Valentine knows who caused the outbreak, and Umbrella knows she got out of the mansion. To silence STARS survivors, Umbrella releases Nemesis, a Tyrant with a parasite grafted on that makes it smarter, able to use weapons and open doors, and relentless.
Jill teams up with Carlos Oliveira, a mercenary from Umbrella's own countermeasure unit. His squad was told the mission was civilian evacuation, and the longer he spends in the city, the clearer it gets that Umbrella never cared about saving anyone. Nemesis infects Jill, Carlos finds a vaccine, and Jill finishes Nemesis with an experimental rail cannon. The two are airlifted out in time to watch the US government destroy Raccoon City with a missile, closing the chapter that covers Resident Evil 2, 3 and both Outbreak games.
The Outbreak games run through the same week and follow eight civilians, including a reporter named Alyssa Ashcroft. Remember her name. It matters again in Requiem.
Code: Veronica and the Fall of Umbrella (December 1998)
Claire got out of Raccoon City without finding Chris, so she keeps looking. In December 1998 she breaks into an Umbrella facility in Paris, gets captured, and is shipped to Rockford Island, an Umbrella prison in the South Atlantic. The T-virus gets loose there too. Claire manages to send one message, through Leon, asking him to tell Chris where she is. That message is why anyone knows she's alive.
She teams up with another prisoner, Steve Burnside, and they learn the island belongs to the Ashfords, one of Umbrella's founding bloodlines. Alexander Ashford engineered his twin children, Alfred and Alexia, and Alexia turned out to be a prodigy who built her own virus, T-Veronica. In a compatible host, it gives enormous strength and speed without destroying the mind. She infected herself and froze her body for 15 years at a base in Antarctica so the virus could bond properly.
Alfred takes control of Claire and Steve's escape plane and flies it to that base, right as Alexia is about to wake up. Wesker is headed there as well, because a virus that adds power without costing sanity is exactly what he wants. Alexia wakes fully in control and kills Steve, using him as a test subject for T-Veronica. Chris follows Claire's message to Rockford Island, meets Wesker for the first time since the mansion, then goes to Antarctica. He and Claire put Alexia down, but Wesker's people have already taken Steve's body, which carries T-Veronica now. Chris fights Wesker and gets badly beaten, and only the collapsing base ends it. Wesker leaves with T-Veronica on top of everything he took from the mansion.
Over the next few years, government action, investigations, lawsuits and public anger over Raccoon City sink the company. Umbrella goes bankrupt.
Resident Evil 4: Las Plagas (2004)
By 2004, Umbrella is history and Leon Kennedy works for the US government. In Resident Evil 4, he's sent to a remote village in Spain to rescue Ashley Graham, the president's daughter. It looks like another virus outbreak, but Leon soon works out that the villagers carry Las Plagas, an ancient parasite controlled by a religious cult called Los Illuminados. The cult plans to infect Ashley and send her home to take over the United States from within.
Ada Wong shows up in that village, alive six years after Leon saw her fall in Raccoon City, and again she's after a sample for an employer she still won't name. Leon finds Ashley early, but the cult leader Sadler has already had a plaga implanted in both of them while they were unconscious. They get the parasites removed with a radiation machine in the cult's lab, Leon defeats Sadler as the island falls apart, and Ada takes the plaga sample and leaves him the keys to a jet ski.
In the original game, she delivers that sample to Albert Wesker. The remake changes how that plays out, but Wesker still ends up with Las Plagas. By now the man who walked out of Antarctica with T-Veronica has both.
Resident Evil Revelations: Terragrigia and the BSAA (2004 to 2005)
Also in 2004, terrorists release a waterborne virus in Terragrigia, a floating solar-powered city in the Mediterranean. The Federal Bioterrorism Commission (FBC) takes charge and decides the only option is to destroy the city with a satellite weapon.
A year later, Jill Valentine and her partner Parker Luciani are sent to the Queen Zenobia, a ghost ship, after a distress signal supposedly from Chris. They work for the BSAA, an anti-bioterror group that Chris and Jill helped found. Its director, Clive O'Brien, opposed burning Terragrigia and has been building a case ever since. The ship turns out to be one of three sister ships bought by the same buyer, which is where the Terragrigia panic was staged and the virus was developed.
The FBC's own director, Morgan Lansdale, paid for the attack, because a world scared of bioterrorism gives his agency whatever it wants. Chris turns up alive. He was never on the ship, and O'Brien faked the distress signal to get Jill where she'd find the evidence. Chris and his partner Jessica Sherawat board a sister ship by mistake, then reach the real Zenobia. Jessica turns out to be Lansdale's mole. Lansdale tries to destroy the evidence by using the same satellite to sink the Zenobia with everyone aboard, but Jill and Chris broadcast a video of him meeting the terrorists anyway. He's arrested, the FBC shuts down, and the BSAA is reorganized as a United Nations agency, which is the global anti-bioterror organization you see from here on.
Resident Evil 5: The End of Wesker (2006 to 2009)
Wesker has spent years collecting the viruses covered so far. First there's a bonus chapter, Lost in Nightmares, set in 2006. Chris and Jill track Oswell Spencer to a European estate, but Wesker gets there first and Spencer is already dead. Wesker tells them what Spencer confessed: he ran a program that created and raised children to be his idea of a superior human, and Wesker was one of them. Wesker throws Chris and Jill around the room, and when he moves in on Chris, Jill tackles him through a window and both go off the cliff behind it. Chris never finds a body and blames himself for three years.
In 2009, the BSAA sends Chris to Kijuju, a region in West Africa, to stop a bioweapons deal. With local agent Sheva Alomar he follows the trail to a huge underground facility, in the same region where Umbrella's founders first found the progenitor virus in 1966. The deal belongs to Wesker. Using 11 years of gathered research, he has made Uroboros, a virus he plans to release worldwide. Almost everyone who breathes it dies, but the genetically compatible come out stronger, which is what Spencer wanted, except now Wesker decides who's in.
Jill is alive, too. She survived the fall, and Wesker has kept her under control for three years. Chris and Sheva remove the device controlling her and chase Wesker to a plane loaded with Uroboros over an active volcano. Wesker ends up in the lava, and Chris and Sheva fire two rockets to make sure he stays there. Wesker is finally dead, but the T-virus, G-virus, T-Veronica, Las Plagas and Uroboros are all still out in the world, and there are buyers for them. His death also doesn't erase Spencer's program, since Wesker wasn't the only child it produced.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 (2011)
Claire is working for TerraSave, an organization that helps survivors of biological attacks. At a company party she and a new colleague, Moira Burton, are kidnapped and wake up in cells on an abandoned prison island with bracelets that measure their fear. Everyone on the island is infected, and the virus feeds on fear. When fear climbs too high, the bracelet turns red and the person can mutate.
The voice watching them belongs to Alex Wesker, another child of Spencer's program, who is dying of a terminal illness. She's looking for a way to move her mind into a younger body, and the fear experiment is how she picks one. She terrorizes a few hundred people and watches who stays calm. The winner is a little girl named Natalia. Alex runs the procedure on both of them and shoots herself to complete it. Claire leaves the island believing Moira died in the collapsing tower.
Six months later, Moira's father Barry Burton, a STARS veteran from the mansion, lands on the island looking for her. He finds Natalia, Moira, who survived the whole time, and Alex, whose body the virus brought back after the gunshot. Barry and Claire kill her for good, and Barry takes both girls home. The final shot shows the transfer worked after all, which means something Spencer's program built is now living inside a child in Barry's house.
Resident Evil 6 (2012 to 2013)
Four campaigns overlap across three continents. The US president plans to finally tell the public the truth about Raccoon City, but someone infects him with a new virus, the C-Virus, before he can. He turns in front of Leon, who has to shoot him. The only other witness is an agent named Helena Harper, and the two are wanted for the killing.
Six months earlier, Chris's BSAA unit gets ambushed and everyone dies except his second in command, Piers Nivans. In the same conflict, a mercenary named Jake Muller turns out to be naturally immune to the C-Virus, which makes his blood the key to a vaccine. The agent assigned to protect him is Sherry Birkin, the girl Claire saved in Raccoon City, now an adult.
Behind it all is Neo-Umbrella, run by Carla Radames, who was remade to look exactly like Ada Wong, which is why the real Ada keeps getting blamed for things she didn't do. Ada follows the imposter to Derek Simmons, a US national security adviser obsessed with her. Carla was the scientist who built the C-Virus under Simmons. Simmons had her injected with it to turn her into a copy of Ada, but she turned on him, took the virus and founded Neo-Umbrella to destroy everything he'd built.
Jake's immunity is inherited. He's Albert Wesker's son, so the man who tried to wipe out humanity ends up being the reason there's hope of stopping this virus. All four stories meet in Lanshiang, China. Leon and Helena take down Simmons, which clears their names. Chris and Piers chase Carla and fight Haos, the giant bioweapon Neo-Umbrella built, and Piers takes a lethal dose of the virus to save Chris and finish the fight. Sherry and Jake escape captivity, Jake agrees to give his blood for far less than he'd been demanding, the vaccine gets made, and Ada finds Carla and ends her.
Resident Evil 7: A New Story (2017)
After Resident Evil 6, the series hands the story to someone new. Ethan Winters is a civilian with no training who has never heard of Umbrella, the T-virus or any of the outbreaks above. His wife Mia vanished three years earlier, and he was told she was dead. Then he gets a message from her that sends him to an isolated plantation house in rural Louisiana.
He finds her almost immediately, but something takes hold of her, she attacks him and cuts off his hand, and he's knocked out. He wakes deeper in the house without her, and finding her again drives the rest of the game. The house belongs to the Bakers: Jack, Marguerite and their son Lucas, an ordinary family until something got into them. They hold Ethan prisoner and can't be killed for good. The exception is their daughter Zoe, who is infected but still herself and helps Ethan by phone while working on a cure.
The cause is the mold, a living fungus rather than a virus, and it links everything it infects to whoever controls it. Here that's Evelyn, a girl who is actually a bioweapon created by an organization called the Connections and engineered to look about 10 years old. Mia was one of her handlers. Evelyn broke loose during a sea voyage and the ship wrecked off the coast. Mia and Evelyn washed up in the Louisiana bayou, Jack Baker found them, and that's how Evelyn took over the family and Mia.
Ethan works his way through the family. Marguerite dies. Lucas, who was working with the Connections the whole time, escapes. Jack keeps coming back until Ethan finally kills him. Ethan then finds Mia and has to deal with Evelyn, because everyone she infected stays connected to her while she lives. He kills her, breaking the link and freeing Mia.
The last shot lands the series back in the story you've been following. A man drops from a helicopter wearing an Umbrella patch: Chris Redfield. It looks like Spencer's company is paying him, but a new company bought the name after the original collapsed and turned it into an anti-bioterror organization called Blue Umbrella.
Resident Evil Village (February 2021)
Three years later, in Resident Evil Village, Ethan and Mia live in Europe under Blue Umbrella's protection with a baby daughter, Rose. Chris kicks in the door with a squad, shoots Mia in front of Ethan, and takes both Ethan and Rose. Ethan's transport crashes, and he wakes alone in the snow outside a village with no idea where his daughter is.
The village has been terrorized for generations by monsters and infection. It's ruled by Mother Miranda and four lords, each with a piece of her power: a countess in her castle, a puppet maker, a creature in the reservoir and a madman in his factory. Miranda split Rose into four pieces and gave one to each lord, so getting Rose back means going through all four.
Along the way Ethan learns the village's history. The mold traces back to a cave under the village, where Miranda found it in 1919, right after she lost her daughter to the flu pandemic. She spent the next century experimenting on villagers to bring her daughter back. Then Ethan learns what he is. He actually died in that Louisiana house in 2017, when Jack Baker killed him within an hour of his arrival. The mold rebuilt his body and stood him back up, and he never knew. Every injury he has shrugged off since was the mold holding him together. He's a man made of mold. That's why Rose could be split into pieces and survive, and why Miranda wanted her: a child of a father made of mold was the vessel she'd been trying to create for a hundred years.
Chris's arc explains the opening scene. His squad had been tracking Miranda for months, and the Mia he shot at the house was Miranda, who can take on other people's shapes. The real Mia was locked up in the village. Chris couldn't explain any of it without losing his only chance to get her back. Miranda faked her death, forced the convoy off the road and took Rose to the village herself. While Ethan fights the four lords, Chris frees the real Mia from Miranda's lab, finds her records (including notes on a visit from Oswell Spencer), and plants a bomb on the Megamycete, the giant mold organism under the village that everything else grows out of.
Spencer's visit matters for the larger story. What Miranda showed him about the mold pushed him toward his goal of forcing human evolution. Her fungus is separate from the progenitor virus, and Spencer found that one in Africa, but the obsession that became Umbrella started in this village.
Ethan kills Miranda and gets Rose back, but by then his body is failing. He hands Rose to Chris, tells him to get her out, takes the detonator and stays behind. Chris gets Rose and the real Mia onto the helicopter, and Ethan sets off the bomb, destroying the village and himself. Sixteen years later, Rose is a teenager with abilities of her own, living under government protection.
Resident Evil Requiem (October 2026)
Resident Evil Requiem takes place 28 years after Raccoon City was wiped off the map. Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst, is sent to investigate strange deaths among Raccoon City survivors. Her last name should sound familiar: the woman who raised her was Alyssa Ashcroft, the reporter from the Outbreak games. The case takes Grace to a run-down hotel at the edge of the Raccoon City ruins, where her mother was murdered eight years earlier. There she finds files Alyssa hid before she died, and then she's taken by the people behind the deaths: Victor Gideon, an ex-Umbrella scientist chasing Spencer's old research, who killed Alyssa, and Zeno, an executive operative for the Connections.
Leon Kennedy is working the same case from another direction. Almost 30 years after his first night in Raccoon City, he still cleans up bioweapon messes for the government, and he's carrying a dormant strain of the T-virus that is finally catching up to him. Their paths meet at the Ark, a hidden Umbrella lab under the ruins that holds Spencer's last project, Elpis. Gideon and Zeno believe it's the ultimate bioweapon and that they need Grace to unlock it.
Down there, Grace plays her mother's recording, an interview with a guilt-ridden Spencer, and learns the truth about herself. Alyssa wasn't her birth mother. Grace was an orphan a dying Spencer took in to make up for what he'd done, then handed to Alyssa to raise. In the interview he calls her his hope, and that turns out to be the password that releases Elpis.
Leon, half dead, makes her promise to destroy Elpis. She opens it instead and finds out what it really is. At the end of his life, filled with regret, Spencer built it as an antidote for the viruses he spent his life funding. Zeno grabs it, believes it's the super weapon he was promised, and injects himself, which strips the infection out of him. Gideon sees his prize is worthless to him, turns on Zeno and mutates for a last stand. Leon is nearly gone, so Grace uses Elpis on him, which saves his life and gets him back on his feet in time to kill Gideon. The one thing Spencer ever built for good ends up saving Leon and Grace in the ruins of Raccoon City.
